Honeymoon in Europe : Day 3

Route : Amsterdam !!!

Today we are still in Amsterdam, sunny and cheery Amsterdam.

After a good night of sleep, both of us were very much energetic and actually woke up much early than expected. Breakfast was considered sumptous. There's warm and cold food. Lots of hams and bacons, favourites of Alvin. As for me, a cup of nice, hot coffee is much appreciated and a plate of warm food to 'wake' my stomach up. Then, it's my favourite cereal with yoghurt.
As it was still early before the fall in time for the tour, we decided to walk around the surrounding when out hotel is situated. We came to a square and saw many statues. After peering into the map, so did we realised we were at Rembrandt Square. Rembrandt is a very famous Dutch painter in the 17th century. Rembrandt was able to paint landscape in natural drama and painting with shades of the same colour yet bringing out the perspective, etc.
As for the rest of the statues or what this square signify, I really don't know.

After joining the group, we embarked on a half day tour. First, a visit to a diamond factory. We took a little tour in this room with the technicians were grinding the diamond to show the cuts. The more the cuts or the more light can pass through the diamond, the more expensive it will be. It was a short stay as none of us were interested to buy any diamonds.

Next stop is like a little farmhouse located outisde Amsterdam, on the way to Volendam. We were waiting outside the house as there was a group in the house before us.

The first demonstration is cheese making. There is girl who will narrate to us how cheese is made while the man diligently scooped the cheese into the bowls or it to harden and curd.

After the cheese demonstration, we were showed to go through a little door and was stunned to be greeted by rows and rows of clogs surrounding us, left, right and on top of our head too.
Then, this man came along and demonstrates to us how a clog is made. He sliced and hand-drilled, not forgetting to add tits of jokes while he transforms the piece of wood to a clog.

After some souvenir shopping at the little farmhouse, we continued our journey to Volendam and came across a windmill. We stopped for some photo taking while grey clouds looms heavily above our heads.

Another 15 mins drive brought us into a little fishing village called Volendam. It used to be a little town surrounding the harbour but after reclamation, it came a huge lake. You can see many people sit by the lake to relax.

We got into Amsterdam and we are free to explore the city on our own. We decided to walk around the city, admire the Dutch houses and canal, while finding out where are the shopping area.

We came by a small market area which is called the Flower Market. It was lined along a cnal and it was not big. 5 mins is enough for you to stroll the market up and down. These are the bulbs of tulips, lilies and other flowers where you can buy them home and grow the flowers yourself.

And soon, while strolling along the canal, reading the city map and figuring the Dutch street name, we reached the shopping district. It is actually only 10mins away from our hotel. But we anyhow walked around the city and we thought it was far, far away from the hotel !

Dutch are naturally friendly and you will be surprised to learn that they can speak English very well. We did some goggling at the men as well as women and find quite a lot of handsome lot but unfortunately, we suspect they are not straight.

Anyway, we shopped inthese 2 popular district, Leisestraat and Kalverstraat. Soon, we found ourselves landed onto the Dam Square where the Royal Palace is situated.

By then, we were too tired and had to returned to hotel to have a little rest before joining the group for our optional dinner & red light district walkaout excursion. On the way back to hotel, I was caught by surprise by this little building. It is actually a movie theatre. It was the Fantastic 4 movie banner hung outside the building that gave it away. After a closer inspection, it was confirmed a movie theatre.

The dinner was early and starts at 6.30pm. The sun was still hanging high up in the sky and we are still trying adapt that it is for dinner and not lunch. I tried a typical Dutch cuisine and it tasted good. After dinner, we had a stroll around the famous red light district. Our guide brought us around seeing women donning bikini and standing in ,fish-tank' like room waiting for their customers. These rooms lined the streets and we were told many of them are actually non locals. Nothing amazing initially and I thought I was disappointed until our guide led us into this tiny lane where ar any 1 time, only 1 person can walk through the lane.... As you entered the lane, 'fish tanks' lined on both sides of the lanes with almost perfect bodies, barbie doll look women standing by the glass full length windows and/or door. They just look so Ms Universe and if you see them on the street, it will never occur to you of the profession that they are holding. According to our guide, this is a respected profession in Holland and the girls are well protected. They pay taxes, are protected by social rights, receive monthly health checks, etc.

There are actually a lot of other things to do in Amsterdam. I wanted to visit the Heinekien Musuem but unfortunately it was closed on Monday. I also wanted to visit this meusuem which showcase bags and purses but we had no enough time. There is a whole district where fashon musuem is located, much to my delight.

Both of us liked Amsterdam and we fell in love with this city just minutes when it began to unfold in front of us. I loved their house so much that Alvin suggested if I had loads of money in the future, I should just buy a piece of land in Sinagpore and build my little dream house. And be the envy of the neighbours.

Ha ! That's a good suggestion to dream on definitely !

Honeymoon in Europe : Day 2

Route : London (via France & Belgium) to Amsterdam !

Indeed, I was awoke at 0445 by the hotel's morning call..... On my....... I think I haven't even sleep at all...... With my blurry eyes, I took a peek at the window and the sky was breaking, it was in dark blue and not black colour.....

After a warm shower to perk me up and little packing, we headed to the lobby promptly to meet our Tour Director. To our atonishment, there were already heaps of people there. Little did, I realised that it was not our Tour Director as ours were downstairs. The hotel lobby is on the 1st floor.

As we proceed down the escalator, another heaps of people greeted us. No, it's not our Tour Director again ! Apparently, there were 3 groups (including ours) of tour departing at the same time, at the same hotel.... After a little hunt, we finally managed to locate our Tour Director who was at the other end counting our luggages.

Our baggages were loaded on the coach promptly by the Tour Driver and we were on the road soon. The sky was bright by then when we set off. It was only 6.10am.

The ride from London city to Dover (where we are going to board the ferry) is about 1 hr 30 mins away. As the hotel's breakfast room was not open at the time when we set off, we were given packed breakfast. It looked good and definitey healthy with bread, water, yoghurt and an apple. But I was sad. I hate cold breakfast. And this definitely doesn't liven my spirits at all. Despite that, I still ate coz I'm hungry ! The lebanese supper we had last evening just didn't fill my stomach afterall.

Soon we arrived into Dover and the sun was shining brightly with cool breeze. The weather is just perfect for any holiday ! We were slightly a bit early so we gotta hang around the place as our ferry was scheduled to be at 0915.

It was an P & O ship and it is definitely a ferry. It was huge when coaches and cars can drive into its platform. When we went onboard, we can actually work around and it is like a cruise, just minus away all the shiny pillar, spanking carpets. You sit on armchairs, there's a game arcade, many different kind of F & Bs to suit your choice. There is even a DFS for shopping.
Initially, I thought I'm going to take something like those Bintan ferry. Haa !

After 1hr 3o mins, we arrived in Calais (car-lay), France ! The weather in France was warmer but I like it. We got on to our ultra luxury coach with provide up to twice as much legroom and we zoomed into the highway of France to Holland. By then, it was already 1130 as the rest of Europe is 1 hr ahead of England. The entire journey is going to take 4.5 hrs, non-stop. But of course, our coach will stop for break.

As France, Belgium and Holland are under the European Union, travelling from 1 country to another is such a breeze. Without you knowing, we zoomed in Belgium with just a little traffic sign board greeting us.

There wasn't anything much to see as we were travelling on highway and due to lack of sleep the night before, I dozed off and awoke again quite many times during the journey. A hard knock suddenly shoke me up and suddenly, I am in Holland !
I was really getting excited.......pretty buildings greeted me as we drove into Amsterdam. By then, it was almost late afternoon and we are going on a canal cruise. The cruise was already waiting for us by the time we arrived and we were in the boat the next minute getting a glimpse of Amsterdam.

We were told bicycles is a way of life of the Dutch. The most common kind of transport in Amsterdam. The most environmentally friendly one. I witnessed a lot while the coach drove into the city. But never in my life I saw THIS much ! Not even in Beijing. A multi-storey of bicycle park - as our boat sailed passed.
Amazing architecture unfolds as we sailed through the canals. Pretty houses and buildings greeted me as I passed. Small doors and large windows are typical design of Dutch buildings. I adore and fall in love with them. I have a penchant for huge windows as I like natural light to flood the apartment (if I own one).

We were also told the canal barges are also houses for many. A house where they stay and not as a holiday house. Rows and rows of them lined on the canals neatly, one after another. Some are really so pretty that you will simply hope to own one. People sit by the canals enjoying the day just made the city so idyllic.

After a relaxed 45mins cruise on the canal, we headed to had our dinner. Yes, dinner while the sun is still shining brightly at 1900. Alvin and me were just not getting used to have dinner that 'early'. We had dinner at a chinese floatinf restaurant. To be exact, we were told it is an Indonesian restaurant serving Indonesian food. The Dutch used to monopolise and run Indonesia during the 15th 16 th century and so they picked up many Indonesian cooking. But I can assured you, there is nothing close to being Indonesian except the way they served the food. You sat around a round table, not long. The decor of the restaurant is chinese, the service staffs are chinese, the food and cooking method used are also very chinese. Alvin was of course very much delighted as he never expect to be served chinese food, what's more on the 1st day of the tour !

It was almost 2000 when we finished our dinner and the coach drove us to the hotel. We were located near the lively Rembrant Square. It was a 4* hotel. It was a fantastic hotel although it was small. Look at the room, how cool it is. It was amzed by how minimial it has yet you don't feel lack of something. The colour of grety and just white simply makes the room looks very chic.

The view from our rooms window overlooks a little garden, no traffic below. Very Quaint.

Very nice hor ?

We were so tired after shower that we totally knocked out by 10pm. No night walk......

Food you must eat when you are in Macau

Boss was so kind to give us a retreat to Macau for the effort we put in this year to achieve our target.

This has the 4th time I've been to Macau, though sightseeing is the same but I also don't know why I never get tired of this little city. Maybe the rapid entertainment expansion in the city has kept it lively all the time. Everytime I go, there is always something I see, discover and learn.

Beside Macanese cuisine, there is always these 2 food items that I never miss when I am in Macau.....

姜汁状奶. A dessert serves hot. Milk is boiled together with ginger juice to a certain temperature and left to cool. The liquid will curd and become like a pudding. Very delicious if you are someone who likes ginger. One of my colleague said it taste better than ginger chicken that maternity mothers always had during their confinement months and suggested that the ever popular confinement dish should be replaced with this as it is healthier. Haa....

You can find this dessert in almost all dessrt shops in Macau but this one is best found at a old shop near the foutain at Senado Square.

Next in line, the ultimate ........... 猪扒包 !!!!!!!!!!

I cam across to know this gem of Macau from an HKG TV food show. One evening about a year and a half ago, a late night tv programme was introducing Macau and showcasing its food. I wasn't really watching the programme but this just caught my attention during that few minutes. If I remember correctly, this pork chop bun was done traditionally and never change its method of marinating and cooking until now. Apparrently (if I am correct), the owner learnt the way of making this bun (marinating the pork) from a Portuguese chef and since then the bun became popular. I remembered it does mentioned it also uses brandy as part of the marinating items. In addition, the buns are all charcoal baked and thus it produces a very fragrant smell when you sank your teeth into the bun.

It was summer and the weather was hot and humid at 32 degree celsius. The queue was long and we actually queued 30 mins for it. Die die must eat mem...... You cannot imagine our satisfaction when each of us bite into the bun, the aroma complementing the hot juicy pork chop is simply perfect ! A divine afternoon tea delicacy, I will call it.

You can complement the bun with pork chop noodles which is also simply delicious .... and not forgetting the spicy curry 鱼旦 (fishball) ........

Another of this shop specialty is their hot milk tea. If you are someone who like (thick) milk tea, after drinking this one, you will never forget how good it taste. Unfortunately, there was no seating place available so we had takeaway and no chance to try the milk tea.

So where to find this ? It is located at Taipa island of Macau, and the name of the shop is :
大利来记.

I think every Macanese taxi driver knows where it is. They never fail me whenever I took a taxi there, just be telling them in cantonese, 'I want to go to tham zai, the very famous zhu pa bao shop' !

Honeymoon in Europe : Day 1

The photos of the trip are still in the process of editing..... it has taken pretty long this time round and I'm getting impatient myself.

By day 2, pics and pics of it will be coming, I promise.....

It was an early day as we are on the morning flight to London via Bangkok on Thai Airways. We had wanted a direct, non-stop flight but to no avail. Flights from Singapore to London were full.... unless you are wlling to pay a premium for the same seat onboard that airplane. So, we began scouting for alternatives on other asian carriers via their home cities while making sure they also offered the best timing.

As I was busy with work and left the decision of the air ticket purchase to Alvin. He managed to secure Thai Airways from waitlist which was considered good luck as we were just a month away from departure at that time.

We thought we were going to enjoy SQ's kind of similar Krisworld on TG but no ! No even 1% ! There was none personal tv, shows on the big screen sucks..... and can you imagine how you are going to survive that 11 hour flight from BKK to LHR. It really took ages. The only thing we can be contented about is the legroom onboard. Spacious enough for that extra comfort.

Transiting in BKK new international airport was a breeze too. We thought the 3 hour transit is going to kill us but we are surprised we managed to pass thru it without a second of boredom. The shopping in the airport was endless. Though all are branded but it is interesting just to do window shopping. Then, we settled for a early lunch and we even scheduled a 40 min foot massage. Although it cost more for a foot massage in the airport, but it is still very cheap when you convert into SGD.

Finally we landed in LHR on time at 1830 and was getting excited ! But I never imagined the crowd at the custom can be so horrendously long that the happy feeling diminshed quicker than the queue will move. The best part is 3/4 of the people in the queue were Indians. It really took me a while to convince myself that I have no taken the wrong plane and landed in some Indian cities.

After a good 1.5 hour of custom clearance, we managed to collect our baggage quickly and exited the terminal to wait for our transfer. It was another round of waiting. By then, it was already 2000 hours but the sky is still bright, just like our 7pm. The transfer coach were packed full with many different people going to different hotel.... Luckily we were 2nd to be dropped off and we happily checked into our tour hotel which I'm going to spend in there for last than 10 hours.

Alvin's sister cousin Yen, who was working in London, came to bring us out for a meal, together with her boyfriend and a friend. It was supposed to be a dinner but it turned out to be a supper because of our delay at the airport. By that hour, we were left with not much choice but to have mediterranean food and we settled for lebanese food.

The friend that Yen brought along is also Singaporean and she was on holiday for 2 months. We were introduced and she was known as Swee Lin. And you know what, she is Neo Swee Lin, the 'mother' of PCK. I only learnt of it later and no wonder I find her pretty failiar but just didn't think hard about it....oh, probably the jetlag and the overwhelming of Indian that British in the English city.

I was pretty caught by surprise that we actually had a meal together and she is an extremely nice person. She talks to you like an old time friend and even offer to pay her share of the supper when Alvin picked the tab for the whole supper. I was quite impressed that Yen know her as a personal friend and Yen gave me more surprises, big, bigger and biggest surprises later on. Will share more on this later on when the day comes.... haa haa....

We finally hit the sack at 12 midnight but.....but....we got to be awake at 4.45am ! We are going to meet the Tour Director at the hotel lobby at 5.30am.....

......... aren't we suppose to enjoy a relax holiday ? .............

The many facades of Eiffel Tower

Will Paris without the Eiffel Tower, still be so romantic ?

Whether yes or no, the Eiffel Tower does add that dash of romance in Paris ever since it is there.

As far as I had went, as much as I had seen, I have not yet find or found something that can match Eiffel Tower if you are talking about romantic.

Here's showcasing..... the Eiffel Tower......

Does this give you a feeling of the 1920s or 1930s ?

How about this one ? The western Shanghai Bund in the 1950s ?

The presence..... Eiffel Tower, gliterring away in the cool evening of summer Paris.....

Animal Farm in the Office

I did not realise I have started to rear an animal farm in the office over the years..... just look at my collection.....

For a start, a rabbit sitting underneath the monitor, staring at me daily while at work .....

Next, at a corner sits the giraffe and a cat ......

Right on top of the CPU is a kampung of them, a dog, 2 pigs - pink ones ! & a bear sticking on the CPU ! Hee hee......

It's not so bored after all if I need to OT.....

Miss La La

Weeks ago after a dinner with a colleague at Parco Bugis, we decided to do some window shopping to burn away some of those food that our stomach can carry.

Chanced upon the totally revamped Charles & Keith and was utterly surprised by the new facelift. It is more of like a concept store and there are more choices. Not in terms of varieties of shoes (which is their primary business) and bags, they are also into making belts and sunglasses. Yes, cool sunglasses.

I was attracted to this very retro orange framed sunglass and took a picture wearing it.

Do I look like Miss La La ?

Cool..........isn't it? Ha ha ha.......

Duckie

I've finally got my rubber duckie !

It was in such a coincident way. Was on my way back to the office after lunch and suddenly saw a bunch of people sitting and standing behind a table under the sorching hot sun. I was curious and decided to have a look and realised they were selling the duckie ! Apparently, they said this is a limited edition duck because the beck is red or brown.... whatever, the UPS colour. The duckie was endorsed by UPS and the money goes to charity.

THe Singapore River Duck Race is once back again and I am really looking forward to see a river of yellow in September down the Singapore River again.

Honeymoon in Europe : Summary

After the whirlwind trip to Bali and a super busy week in the office, I departed on the following Saturday to London to embark on my honeymoon..... Got a good deal from company and so to recipocrate, I must observe every bit of how the tour is run and give structured comments when I returned. So again, you can say it's a 50 50 trip again. Hey, why not ! Working cum holiday, how many people can do that.....if you are not working in the travel industry...haa haa haa......

Morning flight to Europe was really terrible and it made worse if no sufficient things are in placed to keep yourself entertained onboard. Upon arrival doesn't gave you agood mpression of the countries make me wonder is the decision correct to choose to land in this spot.

Coupled with good weather and bad weather has their fair share of the trip, bringing us from happy to sad ...... lousy breakfast that I hated at times ....... laziness of me got into my time and thus not able to enjoy sumptous breakfast ...... how nice it was to enjoy spicy thai food in a thoroughly wet and cold evening.

What goes up must come down theory..... everything you think is good will have its fair share of bad..... whether it is the food, hotel, meal, sightseeing, etc... etc... More importantly, how you make the best out of it and has a good time. Whether it double SGD or not, I shop and buy.... and when it tripled SGD, I still continued to shop and buy... haa haa haa.....

And this is one holiday that Alvin and I had not even a single tiff, not even the slightest one WHICH is often RARE......

Not forgeting a pleasant surprise and am still waiting for it to happen....

More details of the trip is coming up soon once I've sorted out the pictures and videos..... Learnt a lot and wanted to share... more importantly, putting down traces of my life and travel so that when I grow old and lost my memory....there's a place for me to go and pick them up....

Bali 50 - 50

This is the 5th time to Bali and likewise compared to the previous trip, this can also be considered a 'working' trip cum holiday. Thus the 50 50.

My boss was the chairman of a young executive committee of a social community affair and so I was roped in to be a associate. This Bali trip was an inaugural trip for the committee and its member of the travel club.

All participants were met up at the airport and it was tough trying to remember everyone's faces and names but I was trying. And thought I could sit wif my lurpy sista and our bro on the flight as all 3 of us are from the Lim family. Unfortunately, I was assigned to sit for a pair of twin sisters...... Sad initially as I do not know them well and basically you can say I was alone and so I flew the 2 hours flight without busy yaking away and you can imagined how slow time flies.

And finally we arrived in Bali and after a especially snail paced custom clearance, we were greeted with our bags lying on the floor beside the carousal bag. It was this long we took. After head counting and baggage ownership check outside the arrival hall, we were sent to the bus and yay ! the Lego bus again. Our hair was messily blown in the cool Bali breeze... And a spread of finger food and champagne.... a group of us decided to head down to the street of ubs just 5 mins of walk away from the resort. Though I was tired, I glad I made the effort coz it really helped to foster the bond of everyone who is there. This is because almost everyone knew everyone for that first time. After rounds of game of 7-Up, Big Fish - Small Fish, we retired back to room for a sound sleep....

Wakie Wakey !!!!!! It's breakfast time and city tour early the next morning ..... The place we are going to visit is Uluwatu.... It was a temple nested on top of the hill and we had to climb up a Looooooooooooong flight of steps to the top but you will not regret it as the view of the ocean is fantastic ! Due to respect, anyone who their kness exposed are to be wrapped up in sarong and I was pretty happy with the sarong colour coz it reminded me of my secondary school days, the Ah Lian school .... haa haa haa......

Not only do we have to attempt the steps, we have to put in more effort to look out for the monkeys which is everywhere surrounding us. Big fat ones with the David Beckham, rooster hairstyle..... Everyone walked in fear as our tour guide warned us of their ferocious when it came to food, sunglasses, dangling earrings...... I guessed many were half believing him until we witnessed a monkey snatched away a Taiwanese tourist's sunglasses that she put on top of her head.... The monkey was so fierce and hissed away all his mates whenever any monkeys wanted to go near him. No amount of food is enough to lure him down definitely. Anyway, we just continued to woo-ed, wow-ed at the ocean, happily snapping pictures away....

After Uluwatu, we were brought to Bali's Cutural Centre and I was really expecting a cultural centre like a musuem, or some cultural performance. But it's not. We were brought to a 'park' carved out from limestone cave and saw the Gaurda statue. Oh, Garuda is actually a bird !

Everyone was hungry by then and lunch was arranged at Jimbaran Bay. It was a popular spot in Bali and this is where you can enjoyed bbq seafood by the beach in the evening. Listening to the wave coming in while your feet are half submerged in the fine sandy beneath you, looking at the glitterring lights shimmering over the other side of the beach. Jimbaran Bay is also the area where most 5 star hotels are located and also one of the place where a bomb went off during the 2nd Bali bomb.

But anyway, I thought it was just plain mad to have seafood by the beach in the day. It's going to be so hot ! Indeed, warm air swarmed us as we approached the designated restaurant. Everyone was uncomfortable complaining about the heat until our large coconut drink arived. No grumble of the heat anymore when our food arrived. Everyone was given a big plate of seafood. We were still shocked by the portion served for 1 person but we still happily goffled down the food.

After lunch, it was back to the resort or free & easy shopping. As the sun was really very hot, fi and me decided to go back to the resort to laze or waddle by the pool. And she chided me for not reminding her to bring her swimwear but keep remebering the sunblock :<

By defualt what... go resort must bring swimwear one mah...... got time to use or no time to use only wat...... Going into the cooling water was definitely not my forte and you can tell I am not enjoying that moment any bit from my expression.

But after a while, it was okay wth a little bit of swimming to warm up my body.... and what my lurpy sista do... sleep.... with her ipod loudly stucked into her ears. After a while, Celest, Joe and Nick joined us and we had a good time at the pool yakking away while Lao Niang lazed the afternoon napping away.

Some of the gals were more looking forward to theSaturday evening after dinner as Bali is also famous for its happening nightspots in Kuta. After dinner, a bigger group of us decided to walk down the street again for a drink. As we were early about 9pm, the street and bars were still very empty. So the mood was a bit dampened but luckily the boys, oops mem, kept themselves entertained as well as entertaining us by playing Bluff..... They were so funny ! But, despite the laughter, many of us were too tired to keep awake and decided to head back to sack while the rest cotinued to party at Kuta.

It was a dammed good night of sleep lor and I never regretted it ! After breakfast, Lao Niang and me was scheduled for spa. A 20++ SGD 'play play' massage to spend the morning away... Lunch was upoosed to be at Krispy Kreme but boss decided to join us and so it is impossible to ask him to just have bread for lunch. He needs a proper meal..... And so shopping time was aso cut to zero. But we still managed to lug 3 dozens of Krispy Kreme back to resort.

Krispy Kreme is an American franchise of super softy, melty donuts..... Until now, I still cannot forget the peaut-choc donut.... It's simply delicious !!!! And you can imgaine when I spotted one in London Harrods 2 weeks later, I insisted to have one even though the price is 3.5 times more than what I have paid in Bali..... talk about that later....

Of course those 3 boxes are not for myself, we helped tourmates to get 2 boxes and Fi and me decided to get a box and share with the rest of the tourmates.... but the 2 of us polished 3 donuts each..... hee hee....

Dinner was supposed to be at Ku De Ta but it was fully booked and we settled for another sunset beach restaurant (also atas one too) that is ony 2 mins walk away from the resort. The sunset was equally stunning and we had a great dinner before leaving for the airport.

The holiday, though was short....but I believed everyone enjoyed themsleves. By 3rd, everyone knew everyone. New friends are made, current friends grow stronger and that's what this trip is all about !
