My Good Old Friends

I go to Harbourfront almost once every month and have never met any friends before.

This evening, I met 2 in fact - at Harbourfront.

I am making a trip there to sign up for my facial package which today's is the last day of the promotion. I am suposedly to reach home by 7.30pm so that I can watch the last part of the last episode of a TV serial.

But then, the bus, No. 10 was snailing all the way from Suntec to Harbourfront which already irritates me enough. Rushing through the slow walking young crowd on the overhead is hurdle. I double stepped to DBS ATM t draw some cash & was surprised to caught Albert along the mall. He did not see me. I stopped him and we have a quick chat. After we parted, I regretted not going coffee with him when he offered. We haven't meet up for quite some time and I was one of the closer one to him among our gang. He has been troubled with relationship woes since we last spoken and I haven't been keeping in touch with him.

Just as I left DBS ATM with an extra 2 steps, I bumped into a senior 1 batch before me, James. Oh wow! I exclaimed. I met 2 long time friends in just such a short time. James looks good and I believed he must be blisfully married, putting all the unhappiness between him & a galfren of ours many years ago. We exchanged namecards and I commented he looked fat in the photo on his namecard. I guessed I shouldn't make this remark but this is true! It doesn't look like him too! He is as good as the good old James I know 10 over years ago!

Oh well, I'm glad I met both of them, though it's just a few minutes.

The Shenton Way Culture

I was parked at Shenton Way International Plaza for 3 days to learn Macromedia Flash animation. It is amazing to know that at the few clicks of your mouse and some creativity, you can wand fantastic animaton for the web. It's just so interesting.

Back to the main topic, I can't help but notice many OLs (office ladies) carry umbrella to shield themseleves from the blazing sun when they go out for lunch. You can see all sorts of umbrella during that 1 hour of lunch break.

I call it the Shenton Way Culture because I only saw this in Shenton Way! I worked in Orchard Road before, Suntec currently, visit Raffles Place frequently BUT never witness such a 'trend'.

Fi said this can be because there in Shenton Way, there aren't many connected malls and undergrounds, like the other places. That's why these OLs carry umbrellas to protect themselves from the UV rays when they step out of their working buildings.

Come to think of it, make sense!

Maybe it is also a better tool for 'chooping' seats and tables at hawker centres & food courts, as compared to tissue packets!

Ha !

'Got Heart' Bear

I went downtown Orchard on Saturday afternnon to run some errands and was on my way home when someone stopped me outside Scotts Isetan.

'Miss, would you like to make some donation to XXX Charity?' Sorry, I've forgotten the charity organisation. The tennage gal asked holding a tin can in her hands. 'Any amount will do', she continued.

I haven't been giving to street donation ever since the NFK saga and I just remembered I have lots of coins and so it's a good time to give some.

While I was staring at the tin can thinking how much I should give....the teenage gal whipped out a cute little bear.

'You may wish to buy the bear at S$3'. Awww.... it's so hard to resist this cute little one.

I parted with S$3, dropped it into the tin can. I left happily and I guessed the gal left happy too. And I realised this little bear has a love shaped on its left chest and it said - got heart.

Next day, after gym, Fi & me met with another round of charity drive again outside Far East Square. The boy was holding a t-shirt selling it for S$10. It's for an organisation for muscle deficiency children. Both of thought S$10 is too much to part with and thought we can make a small donation. The boy handled over an A4 envelope and said we can left any anount in there. Armed with him on the other hand is a document certified by YMCA for this charity drive.

Unfortunately, both of us were not confortable with donation cash in a mere envelope, we declined the donation and left.

Both of us can't help but felt very disturbed how can the charity organisation gave these students just envelopes to collect donations. What if they are being robbed? Or what if they claimed there's no money collect? Though I believe these students are with integrity.

Something to discuss about.

Nokia N70

25 June 2006. I've finally sum up enough courage and pocket cash to change a new mobile phone!

tah tah !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Isn't it cool?

This is not the colour I bought. Mine is Ivory bronze, so ladylike.

My service provider, M1, ran a 2-day promotion and this phone cost S$398 if I continue my mobile plan for another 2 years. And recently, M1 sent a S$100 off mailer and the phone is only S$ 298 !!!!!! I was so excited and after gym, dragged Fi to go with me to M1 at Majestic. Praying the queue wasn't that long.

Just about 3 weeks ago, I made an attempt to go M1 at paragon, putting my feet down, I MUST CHANGE MY PHONE...at a cost of $438. This price has not gone down for a few months! I've been monitoring since March. Luckily, heehee...the sales person told me, 'Ma'am, the wait is at least 1.5 hours. Would you like to wait?' My goodness ! I must be mad to spend my whole saturday afternoon waiting to change that phone in busy Orchard ! I smiled and walked away.

Lucky me ! I perserved ! Yay yay......so happy now.....

The best part is, instead of buying my old phone (which I insisted) which my hubby wanted, he is willing to pay for my new phone ! Yupee ! What a happy gal I am........

Smile Singapore, Smile !

I twitched my brows.......amused by the new headlines today.......our Prime Minister launched a campaign to get all 4 million singaporeans to.....SMILE.....

I'm just speechless....I really don't know whether to laugh or to cry. Well, anyway, this is not a first time such 'service' campaign is launched.

A year back, when the International Olympic Council was here to determine the host for Olympic 2012, Singapore Tourism Board has also launched a similar campaign 'teaching' the service people on how to talk, how to dress, etc, etc. At that time, I nearly fell off my chair laughing when I managed to get hold of a copy of the pamphlets that was distributed to almost all retail workers in Orchard, Suntec area. It was like teaching a 15 year old gal on a grooming course or 'training' her for a pegeant. My goodness....I just find the whole campaign so silly. It should be up to the retail store's management to decide how their staffs should dress & how to talk. I believe STB should have much better things to do.... And SINGAPOREANS are not IDIOTS.

A year later, today, our PM launched another (I find it equally amusing) campaign, SMILE for the forthcoming International World Bank conference this september. Do we have to stand in front of the mirror everyday to practise smiling?

But honestly, Singaporeans doesn't like to smile. Probably such campaign should begins with civil servants. I always have to urge to ask the service person at the counter - "Have you forgotten to bring your smile to work today?"

No matter you are in public sectors or government sectors, as long as you are in the role of serving another person or even animal, PLEASE SMILE. I urge all employers to take the lead, smile to your employees and your employees will smile to your customers.

Inaugural Networking Session

Our 'baby' was finally borned on 7th June. The inaugural event organised by us, a wing from the trade association. We got the turnout as we have predicted and as usual, no-shows was high. This is the norm for our industry, sad to say. However, the trade people was reserved, though this is a networking session. The sad thing is many left early which we were pretty disappointed......

Probably students haven't had much chance to attend such 'party' & are younger, they are enthusiatic !

I'm not pushing the blame to the trade people...c'mon.... We realised our mistake for not keeping the crowd together. The sound system was a total disaster. People at the back couldn't hear us.....& therefore, they couldn't engage. While I waited until 8pm (i'm at registration)to mingle, I failed too ..... that's something I regetted not being too open to the 'strangers'.

I also disappointed by the lack of support from the secretariat of the association. No one came to lend us out support. the invited guests disappeared without saying anything. We don't even know when they left. However, we are extremely grateful to our dstinguished guest who stayed almost to the end. He was a newly raised prominent person in the public community now and we are so appreciated by his attendance to grace our event. He even wrote a 'thank you' note to us and that's very sweet and polite from a importnant public figure.

The next person whom we are very grateful too is the pillar of our wing, a 'high ranking' person on the executive committe of the association. He stayed till the last guest left, encouraged us by saying the show went on well and we did a good job though all of us can see the 'results'.We are thoroughly at least motivated there's someone who lend us and show us the support we realy need.

Next in the house, a holiday trip !
